Local leaders discuss solutions to school violence

local leaders address school violence
The following local leaders spoke to parents, educators and others attending the program (from left): Dr. Karen Bierman, distinguished professor of psychology at Penn State; Dr. Mark Greenberg, Bennett Chair of Prevention Research and director of the Prevention Research Center at Penn State; John Sheridan, director of learning enrichment and student services, State College Area School District; Tom King, chief of police, State College Borough Police Department; and Dr. Patricia Best, superintendent, State College Area School District. Dr. Ed Herr, interim dean of the College of Education and associate dean for research, moderated the discussion, which preceded the national teleconference.
In response to the growing acts of violence by students in their schools, Penn State’s College of Education collaborated with four area school districts and Continuing Education’s Conferences and Institutes to create a local discussion on the issues. The free program was part of the national satellite teleconference on Kids, Guns, Violence: How to Make a Difference.

Dr. Deborah R. Klevans, director of the Outreach Office of Program Development, led the Penn State Outreach and Cooperative Extension team that organized the local program for this national teleconference. Participating team members included staff from the Outreach Office of Marketing Communications and Conferences and Institutes.
