Penn State Outreach employees, including staff
of the World Campus and Continuing Education, teamed up
with World Campus student Bobby Dowd to help the people
of Afghanistan through the grueling Afghani winter with
donations of warm clothing. Dowd is an employee of the construction
company Perini Management Services, which is under contract
with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to build facilities
for the Afghan National Army. He has been collecting clothes
from the United States with the help of friends, family,
and colleagues.
After receiving a letter from Dowd requesting help, Academic
Adviser Amy Stever coordinated the collection efforts with
the assistance of Outreach volunteers, who packed a total
of 14, 25-pound boxes full of warm coats, gloves, hats,
scarves, sweaters, boots, thermal underwear, and blankets
and, with the help of donated funds, shipped them to Dowd
near the Uzbekistan border in Mazar-e-Sharif.
