About the Course

This course will combine classroom lectures at Penn State with a seven-day, off-site backpacking experience in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and Maine. The lectures will cover all aspects of trail backpacking: the physiology and anatomy of backpacking, training principles for extended back-trail hiking, map and compass skills, journaling, environmental ethics, and travel logistics. A local one-day hike will help prepare the participants for the longer journey. The students will then travel to a hostel in Maine, where they will begin a backpacking journey that will include hiking, lodging at several locations, kayaking, and climbing a summit in the Presidential Range, which has some of the highest peaks in the Northeast.
