THIS COURSE IS FULL. NO FURTHER ENROLLMENT APPLICATIONS ARE BEING ACCEPTED. However, the information on this site may still be helpful if you're considering enrolling in this course in the future.

About the Course

This course will combine classroom lectures at Penn State with a seven-day, off-site backpacking experience in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and Maine. The lectures will cover all aspects of trail backpacking, the physiology and anatomy of backpacking, training principles for extended back-trail hiking, map and compass skills, journaling, environmental ethics, and travel logistics. A local, one-day hike will help to prepare participants for the longer journey. Students will then travel to a hostel in Maine where they will begin a backpacking journey that includes hiking, lodging at several locations, kayaking, and climbing a Presidential Range, one of the highest peaks in the Northeast.
