University Mark

All promotional materials are tied together by one common element--the Penn State institutional mark, which is the heart of the identity system. This "signature" mark is the primary identifier for Penn State and is used more prominently than any other University marks.

The Penn State signature mark is a registered trademark of The Pennsylvania State University and cannot be used to imply or suggest endorsement of any product or service not provided by the University. This mark is for the use of Penn State faculty, staff, and students.

The mark combines the logotype "PennState" with a shield that features the University's founding date and most recognizable symbol--the Nittany Lion. The logotype and shield are connected by a rule, which underscores the word State.

The mark may be reduced or enlarged as needed, but the elements may not be changed or rearranged. As for the rule, only the length may be adjusted. It may be extended to the right as long as needed, or shortened to the minimum dimension, which is no shorter than the length of the word PENN as it extends beyond the E in STATE.

The mark is constructed and proportioned in a specific way. Spacing and the size relationship between the shield and the logotype have been carefully established, and the precise arrangement should not be altered.

Signature Colors/Examples

For all signature marks, four variations are recommended for use. The standard versions of the mark are examples #1 and #2 below. The mark may also be printed in a single color or other two-color combinations, using the accent color and supportive colors. It is highly recommended that the color palette for all signature colors stay in the blue family. Below are acceptable logo variations.
