Penn State

July 27–31, 2008

Spend five days in an intensive program learning how to produce a television newscast!

Dear Prospective Team Member:

I invite you to be part of the Penn State Institute for Broadcast Journalism. If you join the team, you will be making a commitment to explore one of the most important roles in our democratic society: a broadcast journalist.

For five days you will be an important part of this team. It will be a busy and, at times, chaotic week, but I can assure you that it will be one of the most rewarding experiences you will have.

Although this is an institute, you will have a major responsibility to this community; you will be covering stories that affect Penn State and the Centre County area. You will be using professional graphics and music, high-quality field gear and editing equipment, and the top newsroom operating system in the industry. The pressure will be real; the result will be positive and professional.

All the lectures and supporting documents you will receive are intended to help you become a better journalist. You will be taught by faculty members who have served in every role in a newsroom: assignments editor, producer, reporter, photojournalist, news director, and station manager.

If you decide to participate in this institute, you will benefit from listening well and absorbing what you are taught. Many of the lessons will help you in more than journalism.

This letter begins your experience at Penn State; where it ends is up to you.
