Awards and Recognition Committee

Leadership: Chair, Paula Pierce

Review nominations and select recipients of the Commission's grants and awards according to established selection criteria:

  • Shirley Hendrick Award – In recognition of an administrator University-wide who has contributed to the success of Penn State's efforts to serve adult learners. The award is named in memory of Shirley Hendrick, inaugural chair of the Commission for Adult Learners, who advocated for continuing education.
  • Incentive Grant Program – Starting in 2012, the Incentive Grant program has been repurposed to focus on the Commission's prior learning assessment strategy. A pilot program is in progress and will be analyzed for continued funding. More information on the pilot will be posted in coming months.
  • Commission Recognitions – The Commission for Adult Learners strives to recognize success stories of adult learners across the University with recognitions at the Hendrick Best Practices for Adult Learners Conference.

Hendrick Best Practices for Adult Learners Conference Planning Committee

Leadership: Chair, Judy Wills

Members: Apryl Kadish, Leslie Laing, Bert McBrayer

Plan, coordinate, and present a conference that showcases best practices of the University's adult learner practitioners.

  • Continue to involve current and previous Incentive Grant recipients as conference break-out session presenters and in other activities.
  • Identify a conference focus and a nationally recognized keynote speaker.
  • Solicit session presenters who have successful programs and services to share which can be adopted/adapted at participants' locations.
  • Recognize Commission awards program winners and Incentive Grant recipients at the annual conference.

Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) Committee and Faculty Engagement Subcommittee

PLA Committee Leadership: Chair, Pat Shope

Members: Jane Ashton, Rachel Heverly, Paula Hogard, Martha Jordan, Gary Lawler, Kevin Snider, Karen Sones

  • This committee is designed to identify institutional issues of Prior Learning Assessment (PLA), including common definitions, usage, benefits, and efficiencies; and student, faculty, and staff training. Recommendations may be made regarding the format and delivery of PLA awareness information.
  • Faculty Engagement Subcommittee Leadership: Co-Chairs, Martha Aynardi, Karen Pollack

    Members: Durell Johnson, Paula Milone-Nuzzo, Sherry Robinson, Ken Thigpen, Ken Womack  

    • Define the key dimensions of faculty engagement with adult learners.
    • Develop the liaison relationship with the University Faculty Senate.
    • Investigate contributions that can be made by other administrative units (e.g., the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence, which can provide programs on best practices for teaching adult learners).
    • Identify best practices to encourage and support faculty engagement and appropriate methods for disseminating this information.
