The Shirley Hendrick Award
Shirley Hendrick
This award is named in honor of Shirley Hendrick (1936–2000), the first recipient of the award, and a tireless advocate for adult learners at Penn State. Dr. Hendrick was Associate Dean for Continuing Education in the Smeal College of Business Administration and was committed to providing adult learners with access to degree and certificate programs. She was also the inaugural chair of the Commission for Adult Learners.
The Award
The Shirley Hendrick Award recognizes a University administrator whose visionary accomplishments have contributed significantly to foster outreach and increase Penn State's efforts to serve the adult learner. The award is open to academic administrators University-wide, including deans, associate deans, assistant deans, and chancellors, whose visionary accomplishments have contributed significantly to the success of the Penn State outreach mission.
The recipient is announced at the Faculty/Staff Awards Luncheon each spring. The award includes a stipend of $1,000 and recognition at the Hendrick Best Practices for Adult Learners Conference in May.
Award Criteria
- Champions the strategic development and delivery of outreach programs
- Encourages a culture of academic freedom, innovation, and collaboration
- Provides visionary leadership and communicates the importance of Outreach, internally and externally
Nomination Deadline
The deadline for email submission of nominations is December 14, 2012.
How to Submit a Nomination
To submit a nomination, complete and save this cover sheet as a Word document. Then attach it and two letters of support and email to HendrickAward@outreach.psu.edu. Please use "Hendrick Award Nomination" as the subject line.
It is the responsibility of the nominator to solicit the support letters. Nominations without two letters of support cannot be considered.
