The Leadership Series

Law and Education

The Law and Education course educates administrators and other educators about the legal issues that may arise in the classroom and at the district level. Topics include religion, student rights, technology, special education, and employee rights.

Classes will run from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on the following dates (Wednesdays):

Course Overview

The five course sessions will be held on Wednesday evenings from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on the dates listed above. Sessions will be live at the University Park campus and broadcast via videoconference to numerous locations statewide. These sessions will be archived for viewing at a later date if a schedule conflict causes absence at one of the Wednesday evening sessions.

Session 2: Legal Issues Affecting the Classroom 

  • The First Amendment, with an emphasis on technology
  • Search and seizure
  • Creating and maintaining safe facilities

July 10, 2013
Session 3: Special Education 

  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
  • Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
  • Special education for gifted students

July 24, 2013
Session 4: Personnel and Employment 

  • The hiring and termination of tenured teachers
  • Legal issues surrounding the Commonwealth’s proposed change to rely more on student performance measures

August 7, 2013
Session 5: Collective Bargaining 

  • Legal issues surrounding collective bargaining
  • Legal issues surrounding salary adjustments
