About Orton-Gillingham
Orton-Gillingham is a phonetically based, sequential, structured approach effective in the remediation of reading, spelling, and writing of dyslexic students. Sound systems are taught employing all of the learning pathways—auditory, visual, kinesthetic, and tactile. The system builds from simple to complex units of language. It is most often taught on a one-to-one basis but can be taught to small groups by an experienced teacher.
The Orton-Gillingham curriculum teaches, at appropriate developmental times, phonograms for decoding and encoding spelling rules and generalizations, writing, and syllable types.
Who Should Attend
The Orton-Gillingham approach is applicable for special educators and reading specialists and can be beneficial to related professionals and teachers at all levels.
Instruction Methods
The courses will be taught using an intensive practicum, including conferences and seminars composed of lectures and group discussions. Trainees will meet twice a week with two students after school. Trainees and their students will be observed a minimum of five times during the semester, followed by individual instructor-trainee conferences after the sessions. Trainees will also meet as a group with the instructor for seminars in which new material is introduced and for discussing the integration of the material into lesson plans.
