Curriculum

Penn State's 33-credit master of education in instructional systems--educational technology curriculum focuses on the knowledge and skills that educators need to improve learning through more effective use of technology. The curriculum also shows educators how to employ quantitative research methods to evaluate the impact of technology on the learning process.

Course topics include:

  • conditions that influence school learning
  • design of research studies
  • Internet integration
  • computers for higher-order thinking
  • design of technology-based learning experiences

This curriculum uses a blend of classroom activities, Web technology, print, and other media to maximize flexibility. Communication tools, including bulletin boards and e-mail, are used to foster a collaborative environment, providing you with the opportunity to learn from and teach one another.

The curriculum and course format will help you develop practical applications of the topics you study. Students will design, implement, and evaluate technology-based projects in their own classrooms as part of the degree requirement. The program culminates in a master's paper, which will be your evaluation of a project that you have designed, developed, and implemented. Students are encouraged to share their experiences with their classmates and colleagues, thus contributing to the public knowledge of effective teaching practices that use technology.
