Penn State Continuing and Professional Education programs offer educators a variety of professional development opportunities - earning a master's degree, learning about technology, and obtaining certification for teaching English as a second language. Some programs are offered for graduate credit and all are Act 48 approved.
Continuing Education Series for BCBA and BCABA Professionals
Penn State is approved by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board® to offer continuing education for certified behavior analysts. This newly designed program series offers you the continuing education hours you need to maintain your behavior analyst certification, while exploring various topics in your field.
English as a Second Language for Teachers (ESL)
ESL teachers can obtain the ESL Program Specialist Certification required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and earn Act 48 credits toward an advanced degree by enrolling in this 15-credit certificate program.
Evidence-Based Practices for Inclusive Classrooms and Differentiating Instruction (EPIC)
The Pennsylvania Department of Education has issued sweeping changes regarding the training teachers need to be certified in Pennsylvania. Current teachers will need additional hours of training in special education in order to better serve the increasing numbers of students with special needs in general education classrooms. Penn State's Special Education Program has developed this five-course series to meet these new requirements, focusing on evidence-based design and delivery of inclusive classroom instruction. The content is tailored to elementary or secondary levels and is Act 48 approved.
Keystone Tutor Credential Program
The Keystone Tutor Credential Program has been created to help meet the demand for trained, qualified elementary and secondary tutors. Designed for current and potential tutors, this program will also benefit practicing classroom teachers. Courses use DVD and self-paced training manuals, online testing, and e-mail. Lessons are designed to help tutors develop quality standards of practice that will advance student achievement.
Master of Education in Instructional Systems - Educational Technology
The M.Ed. in instructional systems focusing on educational technology is designed for education professionals who are responsible for evaluating and improving technology's impact on the learning process. This 33-credit master's degree program is open to teachers, administrators, corporate trainers, and other professionals who wish to learn more about analyzing the effects of educational technology integration.
Math Praxis Program (1- to 3-credit courses and noncredit option)
This four-course series helps prepare special education and elementary education teachers for the math certification required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The four courses correspond to the four sections of the math praxis exam. For teachers who do not want to take the exam, the courses can be applied toward points needed for certification. Participants may take any number of the courses.
Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Instruction
This is a phonetically-based, sequential, structured approach effective in the remediation of reading, spelling, and writing for dyslexic students. These 3-credit courses are applicable for special educators and reading specialists and can be beneficial to related professionals and teachers at all levels.
Professional Development in Counseling Series
This new series of courses and workshops offers opportunities year-round for counselors, psychologists, social workers, and other mental health professionals to develop the fresh insights and improved techniques needed to advance your practice. The multitopic summer institute and intensive four-day courses in the fall and spring are led by renowned counselor and educator Dr. David Capuzzi.
Professional Development Program for School Nurses
You can satisfy Act 48 requirements and take advanced-level credit courses at convenient times with Penn State's Professional Development Program for School Nurses. The five-course core certificate is designed by Penn State's School of Nursing for public and private school nurses, but several courses can also be of benefit to coaches and health and physical education teachers.
Students with Autism in Inclusive Settings
This 2-credit course is designed to help general educators and others who participate in the education, counseling, or therapy of students with autism and other pervasive developmental disorders. The course is offered at more than twenty Penn State locations throughout the year, beginning in April, in conjunction with National Autism Awareness Month.
Summer Programs for Educators 2008
