Description
This course comprises two parts. Part I will feature presentations on DVD by Dr. Pamela S. Wolfe, Penn State Associate Professor of Special Education and co-editor of The Autism Encyclopedia. Part II is delivered by an autism expert in your area who has been approved by the Penn State College of Education.
The course is offered for 3 credits or can be taken as noncredit at a reduced fee.
Part I highlights characteristics, assessment, and intervention strategies for students with autism. Activities and topics include:
- an overview of inclusion and personnel
- an overview of autism
- selected autism interventionists and making sense of intervention claims
- the theoretical basis of applied behavior analysis, basic principles for instruction, and application of the principles
- collecting data on behavior
- key concepts of inclusion and strategies for adaptions
- the philosophy and implementation of inclusion
- personnel involved in inclusion, models of collaboration, and appropriate communication techniques
- skill/behavior employed in working with students with autism in inclusive settings, including the use of diagnostic criteria and assessment instruments for the identification of autism
- helping families in the inclusion process by identifying national, state, and local support agencies
- presentation of lessons in inclusive settings, along with writing behavioral objectives, types of accommodations, the use of social validity measures, and data collection

Biography
Pamela S. Wolfe, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Education, Academic Program Director of the Professional Development Certificate Program in Autism, Penn State
Dr. Wolfe is an associate professor of special education at Penn State. Her research interests center on persons with autism, severe disabilities, and cognitive disabilities. Dr. Wolfe recently co-edited the book The Autism Encyclopedia and co-directs a federally funded grant to provide education on autism to preservice professionals in special education and those who work with speech-language disorders. She is the academic coordinator for the professional development certificate in autism, a distance education program offered jointly by Penn State and the Pennsylvania Department of Education. She is a member of a number of editorial boards having to do with persons with disabilities.
