The four courses listed below are the first in a series that will grow to meet your continuing education needs.
| Planning for Effective Teaching: Focus on Explicit Instruction (SPLED 5017) Presenter: Dr. Charles Hughes, Professor of Special Education, Penn State Length: 4 hours This module introduces a model of teaching academic skills to struggling learners: direct and explicit instruction. Included are descriptions of instructional principles that are highly related to positive levels of student academic achievement, as well as how these principles can be applied during the instructional process. Lesson design and delivery for teaching factual-level knowledge are described and demonstrated. Also included is the design of effective practice activities (seat work and homework) to be used with newly acquired academic skills. Additionally, demonstrations are provided that show how to use this instructional model when teaching academic rules, concepts, and learning strategies. |
| Applied Behavior Analysis Systems Support: Training, Monitoring, Managing, and Motivating Staff (SPLED 5018) Presenter: Dr. Dennis Reid, BCBA Length: 2 hours This course covers training for carrying out behavior analysis procedures; performance monitoring and reinforcement systems; systems for correcting/improving performance; systems for monitoring procedural integrity; and collaboration with other service providers. |
| Experimental Design and Measurement and Display of Data (SPLED 5019) Presenter: Dr. Jose Martinez-Diaz, BCBA Length: 5 hours This course covers experimental manipulations and designs; component and parametric analyses; use of various observation and recording methods; and close-ups of data displays including equal interval, cumulative, and semilogarithmic. |
