Summer Workshops for Educators

Summer 2009 Noncredit Workshops

The Summer Workshops for Educators is composed of five one-day noncredit workshops, all Act 48–approved. Workshops are offered at thirteen Penn State campus locations. Please review our workshop grid to find out if a workshop is offered at the location of your choice.

Dealing with the Bullying Epidemic  ($99 at most locations)
Bullying among students is on the rise. This behavior is not only disruptive in the classroom, but also can be a frightening experience for the victim.  This workshop will review the many aspects of bullying, including the recent increase in cyber-bullying. Participants will look at bullying from the perspective of both the bully and the victim, as well as learn methods they can employ to implement a bullying prevention program in their classroom that will improve the social climate, and reduce antisocial behavior.

Computer Applications for Educators  ($99)
This workshop is intended to help educators learn practical, fun, and free ways to include the computer in classroom instruction. Participants will learn useful ways for involving the Internet in the classroom as well as specific software titles to make classroom instruction more productive. Information will also include the gathering and use of audio and video.

Internet Safety Seminar  ($99 at most locations)
Computers provide countless opportunities for educational enrichment. They can also cause serious problems for children and teens unaware of the hazards they face from predators, cyberbullies, and others. Our Internet Safety Seminar will update you on the latest issues that young people often face online and will show you how to help your students minimize the risks.

Tips and Techniques for Dealing with Challenging Behaviors (videoconference)  ($99)
One student's poor behavior affects every student's ability to concentrate. Our summer workshop will show you innovative ways to improve the environment in your classroom so that you can help your students focus on learning. Find out what "tried and true" methods can motivate your students to behave better and can reduce the behavioral problems in your classroom.

The Reasons for the Seasons (videoconference)  ($99)
It can be a challenge to help your students fully grasp how and why our seasons change. This workshop can help you create interesting and fun ways to engage students in the learning process, and provide them with a fascinating glimpse into the vital link between our Earth and Sun.

  • Learn how to implement inquiry-based classroom activities that dispel popular misconceptions about the seasons and present the true astronomical reason for the seasons on Earth.
  • Help your students arrive at a clearer understanding of the seasons as they investigate the connections between the Sun and Earth.
