May 12–16, 2008South Carolina Trip
May 18–26, 2008Engage in reading and discussion in the classroom about the cultural and environmental importance of marshes and beaches, and then learn more on-site at Francis Marion National Forest and Cape Romaine National Wildlife Refuge in South Carolina. There you will kayak Wambaw Creek, Bulls Bay, and the Atlantic Coast, and spend a week exploring the swamps, beaches, and marshes of the area, including archaeological sites associated with Native American life in the region, and the ecology of the uninhabited Bull Island—home to red wolves, alligators, and an incredible diversity of birds and other wildlife. The class will also visit the site of an antebellum rice plantation, sites associated with the Sewee Indians, and a cypress swamp.
You will look at ways that the beach is represented in the writings of authors such as Henry David Thoreau, his modernist heir Henry Beston, and one of the twentieth century's most important nature writers, Rachel Carson.
In addition to reading, assignments will include such activities as keeping a reading journal, taking weekly quizzes on reading, and completing a term project on some aspect of the cultural portrayal of littoral zones. You'll also do research and write brief reports on the ecology and history of the area.
The outing will be conducted through the auspices of Nature Adventures Outfitters, "Charleston's Most Knowledgeable, Professional, Experienced and Respectable Kayak and Canoe Guided Tour Service." Instructors will teach paddling techniques for the inexperienced. More information about Nature Adventures Outfitters can be found on the Web at http://www.natureadventuresoutfitters.com/.
