EXPLANATION OF STUDY

I am conducting an ethnography of the Cinema-L electronic mail discussion group. I would like to explore the reasons why people participate in the group, as well as the meaning that they make of the e-mail exchanges that take place. I plan to submit questions to the group network as part of the general discussion, and I also plan to conduct individual interviews with Cinema-L volunteers. My general area of interest is "the use of electronic media as a social practice."

CONSENT FORM

This is to certify that I, ________________________________, hereby agree to participate as a volunteer in this scientific study as an authorized part of the education and research program of The Pennsylvania State University under the supervision of Anita Colyer.

The investigation has been defined and fully explained to me by Anita Colyer, and I understand her explanation. I have been given an opportunity to ask whatever questions I may have had and all such questions and inquiries have been answered to my satisfaction.

I understand that I am free to deny any answers to specific items or questions in interviews or questionnaires. I understand that any data or answers to questions will remain confidential with regard to my identity. I understand that, in the event of injury resulting from this investigation, neither financial compensation nor free medical treatment is provided for such an injury, and that further information on this policy is available from the Office of the Senior Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School, 114 Kern Graduate Building (814) 865-1775.
