Our health section features professional development programs for nurses, school nurses, health teachers, counselors, and others in health-related fields. Many courses, such as those in Violence and Impact of Health Care and other offerings in the school nurse program, could benefit workers in hospital emergency rooms, doctor's offices, and other institutional settings.
Certificate in Nurse Management
This credit program is designed for registered nurses who hold, or aspire to, nurse manager positions. The certificate program in nurse management can enrich your knowledge of basic health care organizations and administration; the collection, analysis, and management of nursing data; concepts and techniques for managing nursing personnel; and concepts and techniques for enhancing nursing managerial behaviors. This certificate program is offered at University Park.
Continuing Education for Nurses
Designed specifically with registered nurses in mind, this series of online courses is appropriate for nurse educators, school nurses, home health nurses and nurses working in hospitals and other facilities, as well as other health care professionals interested in the topics presented. Developed by Penn State's School of Nursing, the series will offer a diverse collection of course topics. Everything you need to take each course is available on the Web site, and new courses will be added periodically.
Pennsylvania Learning Academy for Sexuality Education (PLASE)
PLASE provides education and training for health teachers, coaches, school nurses, and other professionals who work with young people in need of accurate sexual information and health-promoting skills. One-day workshops are available across Pennsylvania throughout the year, at little or no cost to participants. PLASE is based in the Department of Biobehavioral Health of Penn State's College of Health and Human Development, and is a collaborative effort with the Pennsylvania Coalition to Prevent Teen Pregnancy.
Professional Development in Counseling
This new series of courses and workshops offers opportunities year-round for counselors, psychologists, social workers, and other mental health professionals to develop the fresh insights and improved techniques needed to advance your practice. The multitopic summer institute and intensive four-day courses in the fall and spring are led by renowned counselor and educator Dr. David Capuzzi.
Professional Development for School Nurses
You can satisfy Act 48 requirements by taking these advanced-level credit courses in a condensed format at convenient times. Offered by Penn State's School of Nursing, the five-course core certificate and additional courses are designed for public and private school nurses, to help update and expand their nursing skills. Other health educators, such as coaches and health and physical education teachers, will also find several courses applicable.
