This
program will help you prepare for leadership positions with unions,
employers, and government. The courses focus on the many issues that
influence the employee-employer relationship.
Take courses on a range of subjects, including employment law, collective
bargaining, and workplace diversity. Apply the credits earned in this
program toward the bachelor of arts degree in letters, arts, and sciences
or the bachelor of science degree in organizational leadership.
Finish your certificate, as a
part-time student, in as little as two semesters.
- Accelerate your start in the bachelor's degree program in organizational
leadership by transferring your certificate credits.
- The programs for both the Certificate in Labor Studies and Industrial
Relations and the B.S. in organizational leadership allow you
to choose the courses and tailor your learning to your goals.
- The courses are offered at times convenient to adult schedules.
You can take courses in an adult instruction atmosphere at your
local Penn State campus. You also have the option to take online
courses through Penn State's World Campus, with the flexibility
of studying anytime and anywhere.

L I R 100 Industrial Relations (3 credits)
Introductory analysis of the employment relationship and of
the interrelated interests of managements, workers, unions,
and the public.
L I R 201 Employment Relationship: Law and Policy
(3 credits)
An examination of basic legal principles underlying the employment
relationship and their social, political, and economic bases. |

ADM J 482 Seminar, Criminal Justice Agency
Administration (Polex) (3 credits)
Relates theoretical concepts to practical approaches currently
operational on national basis; controversial issues identified,
suggestions for resolution explored.
L I R 136 (WMNST) (DF) Race, Gender, and Employment
(3 credits)
Industrial relations and legislative and policy responses to
labor force issues of racial and gender inequality.
L I R 434 Collective Bargaining and Contract Administration
(3 credits)
Theory, practice, and economic impact of collective bargaining,
including administration of the collective bargaining agreement.
Prerequisite: L I R 100
L I R 435 Labor Relations in the Public Sector (3 credits)
Analysis of labor relations problems within different areas
of public employment.
PSY 451 Leadership in Work Settings (3 credits)
Review of research and application of behavior principles in
the areas of management and supervision.

This highly practical certificate program has been
developed by the faculty of Penn State's College of the Liberal Arts.
Using a multidisciplinary approach, the program addresses twenty-first-century
employment issues and organizational leadership from several angles.
You can learn practical skills that focus on and enhance the understanding
of organizations, their processes, and their interactions. You also
can gain insight into how individuals function within organizations
and why dysfunction may exist.
