Outdoor School
Shaver's Creek's Outdoor School is a four-day, residential program that provides upper-elementary school students with a positive, outdoor education experience. At Outdoor School, students learn about the natural world through hands-on lessons and guided exploration. For more than 50 years, Outdoor School has provided exceptional environmental education programs to students from Centre, Huntingdon, Mifflin, and other surrounding counties. The Outdoor School curriculum supports the Pennsylvania education standards for Environment & Ecology.
Penn State students can earn two credits (see SciEd/RPTM 297 description below) by participating in Outdoor School as cabin counselors. Returning counselors may advance to become Learning Group Leaders and can earn additional credits. Penn State students may also earn volunteer hours to satisfy community service requirements.
Outdoor School is held at Camp Blue Diamond, typically from Tuesday through Friday, in late September and October and again from the end of March into mid-May. Fall semester 2008 will begin September 21 and may go as late as October 24.
To apply for a counselor position, complete the online counselor application. If you are a returning counselor, you must use the online returning counselor application form. The deadline for applications is Monday, September 8. SciEd/RPTM 297A (2 credits): Outdoor School Field Experience
This course will give you leadership experience with grade school children in a residential outdoor education program. You will attend one full day and two evening training sessions to prepare for Outdoor School. You will serve as a cabin counselor; manage participants at meals, during cabin time, and in lessons; assist instructors in learning groups by leading activities and portions of lessons; and teach a cultural history lesson.
