About Shaver's Creek Environmental Center

Shaver's Creek Environmental Center provides a mix of educational and recreational opportunities. We encourage you to explore our Discovery Rooms, tour the Raptor Center, walk the network of trails and boardwalk over the wetlands at the inflow of Lake Perez, and visit our gardens and bird feeder areas. We also have a bookstore and gift shop that focuses on Pennsylvania nature and serves as a resource to our members and guests.

The center is nestled in the ridge-and-valley area of central Pennsylvania, between State College and Huntingdon, in the Stone Valley Recreation Area of the Penn State Experimental Forest, which sits on 7,000 acres and contains the 72-acre Lake Perez (the lake is currently drawn down; see updated news on the lake from Stone Valley). Only twelve miles from Penn State's University Park campus, this area is rich in both natural and cultural history. Shaver's Creek is close to state parks, caves, and lakes. Enticing trails wind through the surrounding woodlands, hillsides, and marshlands.

Each year, more than 100,000 children and parents, students and educators, individuals, and groups visit or take part in our festivals, Penn State classes, bird and animal shows, teambuilding programs, school day trips, Outdoor School, summer camps, public programs, and youth/scout programs. Please enjoy your time with us and return often to visit.

Penn State encourages individuals with disabilities to participate in its programs and activities. If you anticipate needing special accommodations or have questions about the physical access provided, please visit the front office or contact the center at 814-863-2000 before your visit.

Notes: Due to a blue-green algae that grows in Lake Perez that is toxic and potentially fatal to animals, pets are prohibited on the grounds of Stone Valley Recreation Area, which surrounds Shaver's Creek Environmental Center.

If you are considering an unguided science project in or around Shaver's Creek, please note the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission's regulations and permits for the taking of aquatic species. The Commonwealth typically requires collectors permits for such projects.
