Otter / Fisher Reintroduction
Relevance of Topic:
Although smaller and much less familiar
to students than black bears, otters and fishers are also appealing,
and once students learn a bit about them, are also of interest to
them. Students can compare the adaptations, habitat, niche, and
limiting factors of these Mustelids to those of the black bear.
Another comparison which can be made is that of the adaptability
of bears which has resulted in a healthy population, compared to
otters and fishers and the need to reintroduce these species.
This program also allows for discussion
of reintroduction of species as a management technique.

Suggested Sequence for Use of Video
& Teacher’s Guide Materials:
- divide class into two groups, the
"otters" and the "fishers"; while the "otters"
watch the half of the program on otters, the "fishers"
read Pennsylvania Game Commission’s wildlife notes on fishers;
then reverse
- have each group summarize important
points about the natural history and reintroduction of their species;
then each share with the other group
- facilitate Project WILD activity
"Planting Animals"; students in each group can compose
a letter to the Pennsylvania Game Commission to find out more
about the reintroduction of their species
- continue with "Planting Animals"
extension activity, each group creating a diorama for their species
For Discussion:
What are the primary reasons for reintroducing
animals back into their historic range? Are there any disadvantages
for reintroducing some species? If so, what species and what might
the disadvantages be?
