River otters and fishers (a member of the weasel family) were once common in the Commonwealth, but wide-scale lumbering and mining operations forced otters into remote ponds in the Poconos and drove fishers out altogether. Today's timber cutting and mineral extraction are conducted much more responsibly and it's now possible to restore these mammals to their former haunts.
