Local Information
The Penn State University Park campus is surrounded by the picturesque town of State College, in the center of Pennsylvania, between the Appalachian ridges and valleys and the Allegheny Plateau. State College is a community of 40,000; University Park has a student population of about 44,000. State College and University Park combine to offer a friendly, college-town atmosphere, with many shops, restaurants, and points of interest. During summer months the area has a more leisurely pace, with fewer students in residence and plenty of opportunities for quiet strolls around the beautiful campus.
The Nittany Lion Inn is a recommended lodging facility for conference participants. The Nittany Lion Inn is a Penn State landmark and a focal point for fine lodging and dining in central Pennsylvania for more than seventy years. This on campus, full-service hotel is just a five minute walk from the conference venue, with airport shuttle on demand. Lower-cost accommodations will also be available in newly renovated dormitories (four-room suites with shared bathrooms) that are immediately adjacent to the Stuckeman Family Building. These locations are a pleasant ten-minute walk from downtown State College.
Recreational opportunities abound in the area, including Penn State's thirty-six-hole Blue and White courses. On-campus facilities include numerous tennis courts, gymnasiums, and swimming facilities. In addition, nature enthusiasts can enjoy touring nearby Penn's Cave or hiking and boating at the Stone Valley Environmental Center, and more trails and forests at Rothrock State Park. Cultural highlights in State College include art and anthropology museums, smaller galleries, and the University Creamery's world-renowned ice cream.
