Troubleshooting the Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR)

Troubleshooting the Sequencing Batch Reactor presents a description and history of the batch feed system for the treatment of wastewater. The description includes a biological review of each phase (fill, react, settle, decant, and idle), phase time, and adjustments in phase times in the SBR along with the occurrence of oxic, anoxic, and anaerobic conditions. Process control measures (conductivity, F/M, target DO, microscopic evaluation, target nutrient [nitrogen and phosphorus] values, MLSS, ORP, OUR, Sludge Age, SOUR, and SVI), sampling techniques (influent, react, and effluent), and troubleshooting charts are reviewed. An examination of biological and chemical nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) removal measures, including the use of endogenous decay of bacteria for denitrification, is presented. Cold climate adjustments are addressed for the successful operation of the SBR during depressed wastewater temperatures.
