Settleability Problems and Loss of Solids--3 hours, 0.3 CEU

Settleability Problems and Loss of Solids reviews the operational conditions responsible for poor compaction of secondary solids and loss of solids from secondary clarifiers in activated sludge processes. Operational conditions reviewed include

  1. filamentous growth
  2. nutrient deficiency
  3. denitrification
  4. sheared floc
  5. dispersed floc
  6. excess heavy metals
  7. significant increase in MLVSS
  8. low dissolved oxygen and the interruption of proper floc formation
  9. slug discharge of soluble cBOD
  10. hydrous or colloidal floc
  11. young sludge age
  12. zoogloeal growth
  13. scum production
  14. floc particles loss through sludge aging

In addition, the course covers identification of biological, chemical, and physical foams, as well as the use of settleability testing.
