Nitrification--3 hours, 0.3 CEU
Nitrification provides a review of the biological principles of nitrification and their application in process control, troubleshooting, permit compliance, and cost-effective operation in the activated sludge process. This review is designed for treatment processes that are and are not required to nitrify, i.e., do and do not have an ammonia discharge limitation.
The review includes the roles of nitrifying bacteria and organotrophic bacteria in the nitrification process, as well as favorable and unfavorable operating conditions that significantly impact the bacteria and the ability of the treatment process to nitrify. The review also focuses on
- the forms of nitrification that can occur in the activated sludge process
- the operational conditions that can contribute to the different forms of nitrification
- how these forms of nitrification are determined. Their occurrence and fate are presented as well as their significance in the treatment process.
Inhibition/toxicity issues, including substrate toxicity and cBOD toxicity, are reviewed, as well as operational measures for overcoming difficulties experienced during cold weather nitrification. Additional topics include the roles that alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, MCRT, pH, and temperature perform in nitrification, and the impact that nitrite ion accumulation (the "chlorine sponge") has on wastewater disinfection.
