Microscopy Workshop (lab)--6 hours, 0.6 CEU

The Microscopy Workshop is a "hands-on" laboratory session using activated sludge and foam samples. The workshop is designed to acquaint operators, technicians, and engineers with bright-field and phase contrast microscopic techniques. All techniques are presented in a laboratory test designed specifically for wastewater analyses. Also, microscopic observations are recorded on appropriate work sheets and correlated with operational conditions, with accompanying evaluation guides.

The workshop reviews microscopic techniques for the evaluation of particulate materials, dispersed growth, floc particles, filamentous growth, filament/floc structuring, protozoa, rotifers, free-living nematodes, foam, and damaged organisms. In addition to "hands-on" activities using stains and chemical reagents, short instructional lectures are illustrated with 35 mm slides and prints of various components of the activated sludge process.

Sample Collection and Transportation--
For the purpose of examining an activated sludge and/or foam sample from your facility, collect a fresh sample in a plastic screw-cap bottle. A relatively small volume (50 to 100 ml) of mixed liquor or foam is all that is needed for a microscopic examination. Mixed liquor and foam should be collected separately. Allow plenty of air space (at least one-half of the sample bottle), cap each bottle tightly, and label. Note: While storing and transporting the sample bottles, keep cold with ice or frozen gel packs.

Laboratory Dress--
As each participant will work with wastewater samples and chemical stains, it is recommended to dress "down." You may choose to wear work clothing that can be discarded if soiled.
