BOD and Metabolism--3 hours, 0.3 CEU
BOD and Metabolism is an introduction to the different substrates or foods (carbonaceous BOD and nitrogenous BOD) discharged to treatment processes, the bacteria (aerobic facultative and anaerobic) that degrade (metabolize) the substrates, and the aerobic anoxic and anaerobic environments where bacterial degradation of substrates occurs. Operational factors affecting metabolism and bacterial growth--e.g., pH, temperature, and enzymes (including folic acid) are presented, and the bacterial growth curve and resulting sludge age of the biomass are correlated with operational conditions.
The course troubleshoots BOD testing and compares BOD testing and mixed liquor tank DO requirements. It also addresses the use of the specific oxygen uptake rate (SOUR).
