Introduction
It gives us great pleasure to invite talented high school students and teachers from your school to participate in the Forty-fourth Annual Pennsylvania Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (PA-JSHS). The symposium will be held at State College from 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 2, to midafternoon on Tuesday, March 4, 2008. The Pennsylvania Junior Science and Humanities Symposium is part of an established national program of the Academy of Applied Science and the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force. The National Association of Secondary School Principals has placed this program on the NASSP National Advisory List of Contests and Activities for 2007-08. Lodging and most food expenses will be covered by PA-JSHS.
The deadline for teacher and student applications is Friday, January 25, 2008. Applications received after that date may not be considered for participation in the symposium.
We invite you to select outstanding science students who can present either a paper or poster or simply attend the presentation sessions. The paper and poster presentations require the student prepare a written report describing original research results in science, mathematics, or engineering. The presentations will represent the finest efforts of high school students in the state toward either original laboratory or field research, or original work in mathematics or the humanistic aspects of science. All students wishing to present a paper or poster at PA-JSHS must send their application with an abstract of their research paper on a copy of the abstract form (see the Applications section for all necessary forms). The student presenting the best research paper, as determined by a committee of judges, will receive a $1,500 undergraduate tuition scholarship. The second-place winner will receive a $1,000 undergraduate tuition scholarship, and the third-place winner will receive a $500 undergraduate tuition scholarship. The first- and second-place winners will be invited to present their papers at the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, where six first-place winners will receive $12,000, six second-place winners will receive $8,000, and six third-place winners will receive $4,000. The first-place winner in the poster category will be invited to present their poster at the National JSHS in a noncompetitive format. In addition, two other top PA-JSHS presenters will be invited to attend the national symposium. Finalists in the national symposium will be invited to participate in an international symposium held in England during the summer of 2008.
Objectives
The primary objectives of the symposium are to search out talented youth and to encourage the development of their scientific interests and abilities.
Teacher Participation
The planning committee of the 2008 symposium expresses the firm hope that local school officials will provide substitute teachers for those science teachers selected to attend the 2008 symposium. School officials are reminded that federal flow-through monies that a district receives from the state can be used to support costs associated with teacher attendance at PA-JSHS. Teachers should take note that they will be expected to transport their students to State College for the symposium and participate in all scheduled activities.
Act 48
Teachers may be eligible for 7 hours of Act 48 credit by full participation in all PA-JSHS activities.
