About Goddard
The Goddard Chair
The Maurice K. Goddard Chair in Forestry and Environmental Resources Conservation is an endowed chair created
in 1983 to honor Dr. Goddard's distinguished career and to carry on his legacy. With its focus on outreach and policy, the Goddard Chair is unlike any other faculty position at Penn
State. Its mission is to "enhance the University's commitment to the Commonwealth to provide direction in balanced resource conservation and utilization through programs of public
service, research, and instruction." Dr. Goddard is known for his role in creating Pennsylvania's modern state park system, one of the finest and largest in the nation, and his vision
of the centrality of environmental protection to long-term economic development. During his quarter century as the first secretary of the state's environmental department, Dr. Goddard
achieved his goal of having a state park within 25 miles of every
Pennsylvanian.
The Goddard Forum
The Goddard Forum is an outreach effort of the Goddard Chair focusing on emerging issues in environmental and natural resources policy. The fora are intended to be educational in nature and are focused at individuals and others who have influence over how conservation issues are addressed. The fora seek to promote dialogue among decision makers, enabling them to work towards consensus in the use and management of natural resources. The fora seek to facilitate cooperation at several levels and ultimately contribute to the improvement of our economy, environment, and quality of life.
