Dennis Calvin

Interim Director of Cooperative Extension

 

Dr. Calvin is the Interim Director of Cooperative Extension, effective July 1, 2009. Dennis is responsible for providing leadership for the day-to-day operations of Penn State Cooperative Extension and is a key member of the College of Agricultural Sciences administrative team.  He is responsible for facilitating collaboration across the College of Agricultural Sciences and with other colleges and outreach units of the university. Prior to his appointment as Interim Director, Dennis served as the Associate Director of Cooperative Extension since January 1, 2006. In that role he was responsible for daily operations (i.e financial, human resources, risk management, etc.) of Cooperative Extension. He worked closely with Program Leaders, Regional Directors, Academic Units, the Director, and other Deans'  in this role.

B.S., Agronomy and Pest Management, Iowa State University, 1978
M.S., Entomology, Kansas State University, 1981
Ph.D., Entomology, Kansas State University, 1985
Research Focus:
Population dynamics, insect-plant interactions, and sampling technology related to insect pest management; modeling of biological systems; effects of climatic uncertainty on insect population dynamics and management.
Extension Focus:
Pest management of field and forage crops and stored product insects; development of expert systems, decision support systems and pest prediction systems; economic and social aspects of integrated pest management.
Teaching Focus:
During his tenure in the Department of Entomology Dr. Calvin taught courses in Populations Dynamics, Integrated Pest Management and Field Crop Insect Management. He also contributed lectures to a number of courses within Entomology and in other College Departments.
