Impact of Outreach
- Outreach serves more than 5 million people a year.
- Outreach programs reach people in all 67 Pennsylvania counties, all 50 states, and 80 countries over all seven continents.
- More than 1,500 Penn State faculty are involved in Outreach activities each year.
- One in every two households in Pennsylvania has a person participating in a Penn State program.
- More than 50,000 Pennsylvanians serve as Outreach volunteers in master gardener programs, 4-H leadership, and other educational programming.
- In 1910, Penn State assigned the nation’s first county extension agent, in Bedford. Today, Extension has 300 agents serving all 67 Pennsylvania counties, more than 100 faculty members with extension responsibilities, and 50,000 volunteers.
- Ben & Jerry’s owes its creation to a Penn State ice cream correspondence course taken by founder Jerry Greenfield.
- More than 100,000 youth across Pennsylvania are involved in Extension’s 4-H clubs, after-school programs, and programs for school curriculum enhancement. Just 7,000 are rural farm youth—the rest live in cities, suburbs, and towns.
